Short History of the NCAA
The National Collegiate Athletic Association was created in 1906 with the aim to set rules for amateur athletic sports in the US. This was brought about by the incident of President Theodore Roosevelt’s son breaking his nose playing football at Harvard. The president became aware that serious injuries and deaths have been occurring in collegiate football.
Presidents of five major institutions were called to the White House for several meetings. The result was the establishment of the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States, the former name of the NCAA. These days, it is a common sight to see audiences wearing NCAA football jerseys when they watch NCAA games.
